This morning I made an announcement about the behavior of the fans at Friday night’s game. There has been a lot of misinformation about what I said. The exact message I read is as follows:

“During half time of Friday night’s game the dance team gave a wonderful performance on the field. At the conclusion they gave a check for over $4000 dollars to Dana Farber Cancer Center, all money they raised through their own efforts. Congratulations girls for a job well done!

How unfortunate that their fabulous performance and generous donation were over shadowed by the behavior of the very people who should have been their biggest supporters – our own HHS student fans. Your behavior was rude, mean spirited and totally unacceptable. Friday night was a big night for the Dance team. It should have been a highlight of their season. Those of you who marred their evening should be ashamed of yourselves. Your behavior was an embarrassment to yourselves, your family, the school and the whole community.

The job of a fan is to support a team. It is not to denigrate the team in any way. This kind of behavior has to stop. Negative cheering and other mean actions are intolerable. It is time for the leaders among you to step up and take responsibility for the fans. Apologies after the fact are nice, but too little too late. The damage has been done.

Unacceptable fan behavior seems to have been getting progressively worse since we began to have games under the lights. That is a privilege you will have to earn back. We are cancelling home night games until further notice.”

As a community we need to address the behavior of fans. It has been getting progressively worse this fall. I have already been approached by students who want to deal with this issue; they too are embarrassed by the behavior they saw. It is my hope that we can change this culture and resume night games as soon a possible.

Ok first things first. I totally agree with this student paper article that says it’s unfair to punish the entire school for the actions of a few. Here is a novel concept. How about punishing the people who actually acted like idiots? Is that thinking too far out of the box for a school administrator?

But that’s not even really why I blogged this. I’m totally confused why anybody would turn their backs on the dance team in the first place? The only thing I can come up with is somebody on the dance team had to be whoring around with somebody’s boyfriend or something right? Like you just don’t turn your back on your own dance team. That’s just not something you do. There must be bigger factors at play here. This isn’t high school kids sneaking in nips. Turning your back on the dance team was meant to send a message. It almost makes me think they were right to do it. Something stinks to high heavens here. I can feel it in my bones.
